Emerging Adult Discernment Team

Introduction

As a new church plant, we want to move prayerfully and thoughtfully as we discern what certain expressions of discipleship and formation will look like within our church. Rather than rushing to implement programs too quickly, we believe it is important to take time to listen to the Lord, understand the needs of our community, and carefully shape environments that will serve people well for years to come.

For that reason, we are forming the Emerging Adult Discernment Team. This group will help us prayerfully dream, discern, and develop what a healthy and vibrant discipleship pathway for college students and young adults could look like in the life of our church.

Purpose

The Emerging Adult Team is being formed to prayerfully dream, discern, and develop a clear discipleship pathway for college students and young adults within our church. This team will help shape environments that foster spiritual maturity, mission, and long–term faithfulness in the local church.

Our desire is to see emerging adults grow into lifelong disciples of Jesus who are deeply rooted in the church, engaged in the mission of God, and prepared to serve both the city and the world.

Vision

This team will begin dreaming and building a vibrant discipleship pathway for young adults in our church. A particular focus will be helping those connected to our church transition well from college into life after graduation, while also creating clear pathways for young adults who did not attend college but are stepping into work, vocation, and deeper involvement in the life of the church.

Through intentional formation and partnership with campus ministry, we want to help young adults (whether coming from college, entering the workforce, or navigating early adulthood) move into lives marked by:

  • Faithful participation in the local church

  • Servant leadership in the city

  • Faithfulness in the marketplace and their vocation

  • Engagement in God's global mission

Campus Partnership

Part of this effort will involve collaboration with Ignite NC State. Together we hope to strengthen the relationship between campus ministry and the local church so that students who are part of City Movement Church experience a healthy and intentional transition from campus life into ongoing discipleship within the church.

Areas the Committee May Explore

As the team dreams and develops this pathway, several potential initiatives may be explored:

  • Residential Discipleship Program

  • Internship Opportunities

  • Global Sending and Mission Opportunities

  • Theological Education and

  • Additional Formation Environments

Committee Members

Committee members will be announced soon.

Length of Commitment

This team will serve for an initial three-month season. During this time, the group will meet together to pray, discern, and begin outlining potential structures and pathways for emerging adult discipleship within the church.

At the end of the three months, the team will present recommendations, ideas, and potential next steps for leadership to consider.

Connection to the Church's Discipleship Vision

This initiative flows from one of the core pursuits of our church: the Formation of People—helping men and women become more like Christ. Our hope is that the work of this committee will help establish a clear discipleship pathway for emerging adults to grow in Christlikeness, meaningful participation in the life of the local church, and active engagement in God’s mission in the world.

By developing intentional environments for formation, leadership development, and mission, we hope to see young adults grow into faithful disciples who serve the church, bless the city, and carry the gospel into their vocations and the nations.

Desired Outcome

Our prayer is that this team will help lay the groundwork for a sustainable and intentional discipleship pathway for emerging adults. Over time, this work will contribute to raising up faithful disciples, leaders, missionaries, Bible teachers, and church planters who are deeply committed to Jesus, His church, and His mission in the world.
